Research Interests:

I obtained my PhD degree in the field of sociology and social work from the University of Nottingham in 1998.  Before joining the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1988, I had worked as a family service worker, a probation officer, and a child protection worker with the Hong Kong Government

For the past 20 years, I have been teaching social work practice, family violence, and juvenile delinquency in social work programs at both the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. I also supervise MPhil and PhD students. Besides, I have been appointed as external examiners by a number of institutions in the field of social work and social sciences. I am also currently assessment panel member of the Hong Kong Social Worker Registration Board.

I have been actively engaged in research and consultancy work on families in Hong Kong and Macau for the Hong Kong and Macau SAR Governments. I have consistently published reports for the government to impact on their policies on families, specifically on family violence prevention. Besides, I actively engaged in collaborative research work with the NGOs to provide them with empirical information on the direction of their social service development.

The total amount of funding secured for the consultancy and research projects with my involvement is more than 11.5 million Hong Kong Dollars, including 5 million from projects with me as a principal investigator, 6.5 million for projects in which I am a co-investigator. I authored and co-authored more than 10 consultancy research reports, over 50 articles/book chapters, and 7 books.
